The doctoral program in the English Department at the University of Southern California offers students a rich array of courses offerings in all historical periods and literary genres from Old English and Medieval Philology to contemporary American fiction and postcolonial literature. In addition to intensive study of literature, many courses in historical fields also stress cultural and theoretical perspectives. These include, among others: historical and cultural studies in eighteenth-century, nineteenth-century and modern British fiction; colonial and post-colonial British literature; and American literature and culture of the twentieth century.
