The courses are offered within a close-knit community of scholars over six-week summer terms. Depending on the number of courses taken per summer and additional courses taken during the academic year, the degree may be completed with as few as three residencies required. Two courses may be taken in transfer from another similar program. Forty credits are required for the M.A.; forty-eight credits are required for the M.F.A. Offering this program during the summer term allows Hollins to enlist experts in the field of children's literature from other colleges and universities as well as those on the Hollins faculty. Other summer programs in screenwriting and film studies and in playwriting allow for a community of writers to come together over the summer term to create a synergy that is unlike many other campus offerings.     Accreditation Information: Hollins University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  # Of Credits Required: 48  Time To Degree: three to five summer terms    Previous Degrees Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. They must give evidence, by undergraduate record, submission of manuscripts, and letters of recommendation of their capacity to undertake the program. The writing sample for those applying to the M.F.A. must be creative; the sample submitted for the M.A. may be either scholarly or creative.  Pre-Requisite Courses International Student Requirements International students must complete all application requirements necessary for those who are U.S. citizens. Additionally, evaluation of college or university coursework must be done by a foreign credential evaluation service. If their native language is not English, TOEFL test scores are required (minimum of 550 on paper-based test or 79 on internet-based test) along with a proficiency in English form completed by a professional why can attest to the student's ability to understand, read, and write English. This may be in the language of their choosing. The M.F.A. does not require a foreign language competency.  Other Requirements M.A. Degree: Students are required to complete forty credits including ENG 542: History and Criticism of Children's Literature. At least half the courses taken must be literature courses that include writing critical papers. The thesis offered for the degree may consist of an extended critical essay or an original work of poetry, fiction, drama, or creative nonfiction for children. M.F.A. Degree: Forey-eight credits are required for the M.F.A., including ENG 542: History & Criticism of Children's Literature. A total of ten four-credit courses plus a final thesis are required. Four of the courses must be creative and include ENG 510: Creative Writing Seminar or ENG 560: The Craft of Writing for Children and ENG 561: Genre Study in the Craft of Writing for Children or ENG 562: Creative Writing Workshop. Two other creative courses approved by the program director are required. Four of the courses must be literature-based.
