The Student Personnel Services (SPS) degree program is housed within the College of Education at Northwestern State University . This program offers graduate coursework leading to the Master of Arts degree. Within the degree program are two options—college counseling and student affairs administration (professional practice)—offered to prospective counselors and student development professionals who intend to seek employment in educational and non-educational settings. The entry-level (two academic years) graduate program is designed to prepare: University administrators College student affairs administrators Professional higher education and community counselors NSU graduates accept employment in a variety of settings, in different occupational roles, and at different levels of professional functioning and responsibility. Objectives of Master's Degree Programs Students are expected to interact with others with sensitivity and understanding, to listen effectively to the words and ideas of others, to communicate orally and in writing with appropriateness and precision, to be able to examine their own personal values and issues that impact their relationships, and to conduct themselves professionally in compliance with ACA (2005) and/or ACPA (1992) ethical standards. Further, upon completion of the entry level program, students are expected to demonstrate mastery and/or satisfactory attainment of the following: Understand the philosophy, history, values and professional organizations of the counseling and student affairs professions; Learn and practice counseling, interpersonal, and group process skills; Understand the theories and models which guide practice in the counseling and student affairs professions; Understand the values, ethics, and legal issues which guide practice in the counseling and student affairs professions; Understand the organizational, management, systems, consultation, planning, and leadership models
