The focus of graduate education in the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology & Molecular Biology (CMMB) at the University of South Florida (USF) is biomedical research and education. We offer 2 thesis Masters degrees which are completed by research: an M.S. Degree in Biology, with a concentration in Cell & Molecular Biology, and an M.S. degree in Microbiology. We also offer a a non-thesis version of our M.S. in Biology, with a concentration in Cell Biology & Molecular Biology which involved no research component. Our Ph.D. program is in Biology, with a concentration in Cell Biology, Microbiology & Molecular Biology. The Department of CMMB offers excellent graduate research training in core areas of modern biology, and emphasize broad, inter-disciplinary training, which encourages students to cross traditional boundaries. Modern research facilities within the University, and the ease of access to multiple USF core-research facilities in proteomics, genomics, NMR etc. give our graduate students an extraordinary opportunity to design creative and significant research projects. Most, if not all, graduate students will have the opportunity to instruct undergraduate laboratories as Teaching Assistants. Graduate Teaching Assistants are provided guidance from mentors within the department and through the USF Center for Teaching Enhancement. While graduate education emphasizes creative research, graduate students are provided an opportunity to develop as teachers-both necessary skills for success as a professional scientist.
