These concentrations will begin fall semester of 2000 and we are very enthusiastic about the opportunities they will provide. We will also offer 15-hour post baccalaureate certificate programs in both Museum Studies and Historic Preservation. The program is a collaboration that draws on the resources of two strong departments at UNCG: History and Housing and Interior Design. History has been taught at the University since its founding in 1892 and the department has brought distinction to the University's reputation in the liberal arts. The department includes 183 undergraduates and 38 graduate students. The Department of Housing and Interior Design was the first accredited professional interior design program in the state and, in the 1980s, it established the only graduate program in Interior Design in North Carolina. It includes 132 undergraduates and 7 graduate students. The new concentrations and certificates are an expansion of courses previously offered by the two departments and will result in a program that is stronger for the collaboration. In order to prepare students for the competitive job market, the expanded curriculum will provide professional training in historic preservation theory and practice, with courses to support three areas: architectural survey, architectural conservation, and preservation planning. Likewise, the curriculum for Museum Studies will provide professional training in the following three areas of history museum theory and practice: museum interpretation, collection management, and museum administration.
