The M.A. in American Studies requires a total of 33 credit hours. Students must take AMS 6156, AMS 6254, AMS 6805, and AMS 6938 (12 hours in all). 15 additional hours should be selected from 5000 or 6000 level courses in American Studies and/or related departments, such as English, History, Humanities, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Women's studies. No more than 6 hours from any one department may be credited toward the degree without written consent from the Graduate Director. Work in AMS 6375, AMS 6901, AMS 6915, AMS 6934, and AMS 6940 may be included.
During the semester immediately following completion of required course work, each student should take a written examination on two areas of concentration, selected after consultation with the Graduate Director so that they will be relevant to the student's thesis. A six hours thesis, AMS 6971, and a thesis defense is required.
