The Department of Black Studies stands out among the academic programs of its type in the country. Established nearly two decades ago as an interdisciplinary program in African American and African Studies, the department boasts the largest faculty in the field of any such program in the United States. More than ninety different courses are available annually in a wide number of disciplinary areas, including Black American and African history, political science, sociology, economics, literature, psychology, dance, theatre, music, and African languages such as Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, and Zulu. Graduate students may pursue Master of Arts degrees in two separate tracks: the general concentration (primarily Black American Studies) and the African Studies concentration, which requires additional study in African languages.
