Our program emphasizes the application of sociological theory, knowledge, and methodologies in efforts to address contemporary issues and problems facing society. The Applied Sociology Program prepares students for both professional practice in applied research settings, as well as for further academic studies in sociology and related fields. The curriculum affords students the opportunity to structure their coursework to best serve unique interests and offers both an internship and thesis option. The internship program provides hands-on experience for our students to help bridge the gap between theory and practice, while the thesis option enables students to pursue independent research projects that may be applied in nature or involve basic sociological inquiry. NAU's applied sociology program is one of the few applied programs in the country. Our faculty has expertise in a wide range of areas including family, gerontology, gender, social policy, deviance, race and ethnicity, environment, corrections, social psychology, and demography.
