The program aims to serve students with various career goals including those who desire a purely academic preparation for the purposes of teaching at the college level and as preliminary work for doctoral level study as well as those who intend to teach Italian at the secondary school level. Emphasis is placed on the study of the great literary works of the Medieval Renaissance and Modern eras as well as Italian linguistics and the history of the Italian language. While literature and language is the focus of the program, students will also acquire specialized knowledge of Italian history, art history, sociology, and current politics through the interdisciplinary approach adopted in the teaching of many of the courses.
