The Gates PSL Program awards five scholarships on an annual basis to first year students entering the UW School of Law J.D. program. Each Gates PSL scholarship award covers tuition, books, costs of room and board summer stipends to support public service law work. Acceptance of a Gates PSL scholarship represents a commitment on the part of each Scholar to work in public service for five years following graduation. Public Service law work can take many forms; from the criminal justice system, to civil legal aid, to government service and work for NGO's. A significant goal of the program is to reduce debt burden for promising law students so that they can use their law degrees to benefit public interest- often some of the lower paying positions within the legal system. In order to apply for a Gates Scholarship applicants must also submit a separate application for the University of Washington School of Law. The Gates PSL Program also sponsors a prestigious speaker series, lunchtime seminars on public service topics and a host of other events designed to engage the law school and broader legal community in deep dialogue abut the meaning of public service through law. These events also expose students and others to an array of opportunities in the public service arena. A description of the program and updates on upcoming events can also be found on Facebook.
