On Campus

The overall objective of the M.D./Ph.D. dual degree program is to train and educate future clinician-scientists. Having both an M.D. and a Ph.D. offers an individual many administrative, clinical, research and educational opportunities in major medical centers. A dual degree graduate enjoys flexible career decisions, even if he or she chooses clinical endeavors or basic science endeavors only. The M.D./Ph.D. program is rigorous, yet flexible and individually tailored. Each student works with a faculty advisor to develop a plan to achieve academic, research, and personal goals. Students typically finish the program in 7 years. They spend their first two years in medical school. During this time, they are encouraged to complete several rotations in the Ph.D.-granting department of their choice. This experience helps them choose an advisor in whose laboratory they will conduct basic research over the next three years. The last two years of the program are spent completing medical school requirements. Graduates are awarded both degrees after successfully fulfilling the requirements for both schools.
