Duke University Romance Studies Department of Romance Studies Box 90257 Durham, NC 27708-0257 US   Phone: 1-919-660-3114   At a Glance Program Requirements Tuition & Financial Aid Institution Overview Important Dates Upcoming Events Degrees: Program Format: Doctoral Romance Studies PhD On Campus   The Department of Romance Studies offers graduate work leading to the Ph.D. in French/Francophone Studies and Spanish/Latin American Studies; it also offers a new Ph.D. track in comparative Romance Studies, including Italian and Luso-Brazilian. A reading knowledge of one foreign language that is outside the major language is required. (For those following the Romance Studies track, proficiency in two relevant romance languages is required and reading knowledge of a third research language other than English is highly desirable.) In order to undertake graduate study in any of the Romance programs, the entering student should have credit for at least 18 semester hours (or equivalent) above the intermediate level in the major language(s).     Accreditation Information:   # Of Credits Required:   Time To Degree:     Previous Degrees Students in the French/Francophone and Spanish/Latin American doctoral program must complete 18 courses (13 if they have completed an M.A. previously), of which between 2 and 4 should be in a related field, such as another Romance literature, art, history, philosophy, Women's Studies, or the Literature Program.  Pre-Requisite Courses The Preliminary Examination is based on a comprehensive reading list and assures that students have acquired a basic coverage of their major literature. The exam has written and oral components and is taken after two years of graduate study.
