The Department of Romance Studies offers graduate work leading to the Ph.D. in French/Francophone Studies and Spanish/Latin American Studies; it also offers a new Ph.D. track in comparative Romance Studies, including Italian and Luso-Brazilian. A reading knowledge of one foreign language that is outside the major language is required. (For those following the Romance Studies track, proficiency in two relevant romance languages is required and reading knowledge of a third research language other than English is highly desirable.) In order to undertake graduate study in any of the Romance programs, the entering student should have credit for at least 18 semester hours (or equivalent) above the intermediate level in the major language(s).
