Simmons’s innovative dual-degree program prepares students for teaching licensure while simultaneously providing a concentration in a chosen area of liberal arts. This 60-credit program leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) plus a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Children’s Literature, English, Gender/Cultural Studies, or Spanish. Students work simultaneously toward both degrees and, upon successful completion of the program, are certified as elementary, middle, or high school teachers. Full-time students can complete the program in approximately two years. Part-time students must complete the program within six years of enrollment. MAT/Liberal Arts graduates are well positioned for leadership roles as department heads, lead teachers, or curriculum coordinators. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program provides a strong academic and pedagogical foundation, in addition to extensive field experience. As a result, Simmons MAT students are exceptionally well prepared for licensure as elementary, middle, and high school teachers. Simmons-prepared teachers consistently score in the top echelon on state licensure exams, but their real test is in the classroom. Simmons teachers stand out. They bring knowledge, confidence, and creativity to teaching and earn high marks from both pupils and employers.
