Materials Science and Engineering Program Areas of Emphasis: Smart and Multifunctional Materials – fundamental research addressing the molecular structure and materials design of novel multifunctional materials for applications across different scientific disciplines, including nanoelectronics, propulsion, lightweight structures, energy, active systems, and medicine Electronic and Optical Materials – state-of-the-art materials research for nanoelectronic, display, photonic and microelectronic devices; additional efforts include advanced device packaging and manufacturing, and the related materials integration issues Fuel Cell and Energy System Materials – research with new materials, novel topologies and degradation mechanisms of materials utilized in emerging energy systems, including solid oxide fuel cells and advanced turbine systems. Thin film, nanocrystalline, and proton conducting electrolytes, mixed conducting and nanostructured electrodes; interface dynamics and electrocatalysis; thermochemical and themomechanical stability Nanostructured and Ultra Fine-Grained Materials – synthesis of nanostructured and ultra fine-grained materials using various techniques, such as atomic- level manipulation, cryomilling, ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), electrodeposition, chemical vapor deposition, and self-assembly; investigating the mechanical properties of bulk nanocrystalline materials; exploring the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of nanotubes, nanowires, and nanocrystals Materials Characterization and Microanalysis – basic research to understand fundamental links between atomic/molecular structures, synthesis and functional properties of emerging materials; engineered surfaces, interfaces, and nanostructures
