Doctoral
Ph.D. - Social Foundations
On Campus

The Social Foundations area is a multidisciplinary program employing the methods and insights of history, philosophy and the social sciences to examine critically educational ideas, practices and institutions. Its program is built on the premise that the very nature of education and the complex relations between education and society in general cannot be grasped comprehensively by any single academic discipline. Graduate study in the area has two related aspects. There is the general study necessary for an overall view of education. The doctorate, however, entails the sharply focused mastery of one of the standard foundational fields including Comparative Education and Sociology of Education.
