M.A. - Sustainable International Development
On Campus

governments and societies have been struggling to cope with the new realities of post cold-war instability and globalization. The goals of development and the means to achieve them are being continuously re-defined or re-emphasized. As development practitioners (national policy makers, leaders in civil society, national and international NGOs and aid workers) involved with the arrangement and conduct of development policies and programs, we are now, within a growing democratic framework of expectations, called upon to reconcile an ever-widening circle of concerns. These concerns embody emerging ideas of sustainable development and people's participation and inclusiveness as vital to their planning processes; and they also necessitate our evolving of practical methods for their application. Central to these ideas and concerns is our focus on the alleviation of poverty and the sustainable use of natural resources. The elimination of poverty will never be attributable to one cause. Complex though the causes are, enough empirical experience exists to broadly identify what works for the alleviation of poverty, the reduction of inequality, and for the conservation of threatened environments. Learning from experience is therefore an important aspect of our curriculum. Course requirements for the Year-in-Residence will include: Frameworks for Development; Economics requirement; Ecology requirement; Planning, Implementation, and Monitoring requirement; Evaluation requirement; Directed Research; Gender; Rights-Based Approach to Development. Your Second-Year Project will be either: a professional-level internship to give you an opportunity to work in leading development organizations throughout the world; or advanced study to give you the opportunity to enhance your research skills while working under the mentorship of a senior researcher at Brandeis.
