NYU Steinhardt’s Educational Leadership program prepares students for leadership positions in education and policy at the community, school, district, state, and national levels. The curriculum includes a solid grounding in understanding multiple perspectives in a multicultural environment. Students critically examine the conceptual, organizational, political, social, managerial, interpersonal, and technical dimensions of leading schools as well as the social and educational support organizations that are vital to increasing educational opportunity for children and youth living in urban communities. The 36-credit M.A. in Educational Leadership: School Building Leader program prepares students for visionary roles in urban schools as principals or teacher leaders, coaches, and mentors. Students build their leadership portfolios through guided fieldwork with principals. The program leads to New York State certification as a school building leader (assistant principal or principal). The 36-credit M.A. program in Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy enables graduates to work toward social and education equity. Graduates work in child and community advocacy organizations, policy and research centers, private, charter, and independent schools, and international/non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The curriculum offers considerable flexibility to best serve each student’s purposes and goals. The 24-credit post-master’s Advanced Certificate: School District Leader is for those interested in being educational leaders at the district or central office level. Doctoral study in Educational Leadership prepares students for senior educational leadership and policy positions as researchers, professors, or practitioners. Summer abroad programs in South Africa and other settings provide students with an opportunity study educational leadership, policy, and reform in international settings.
