The Ph.D. program in world history trains research historians many of whom plan to teach at the college and university level. The requirement for systemic course work in theory and methodology and in college teaching and the program's specialization in world history are unique features of this program. Studies in world history include comparisons among regions, studies of individual areas in their global contexts, thematic studies, interactions among regions, and analyses of continuity and change at the global level.

Two Master of Arts (M.A.) programs, the general program and the public history program have recently expanded their scope. Both have attracted full-time students who go on to excellent job placements or major Ph.D. programs. Candidates may concentrate in African, Asian, European, Latin American or U.S. history in a global context. Students opting for the Master of Arts with a concentration in Public History also develop skills in public history, receiving a certificate in historical agencies and administration in addition to the M.A. degree. Courses in public history are taught by department members and professionals working in public history and require that the degree/certificate candidates complete at least two fieldwork courses with historical agencies or other organizations that engage in history-related activities. Both place major emphases on the student's exposure to the broad array of historical methodologies and on training to become able researchers and writers.
