The M.A. and Ph.D. curricula focus on the development of research skills needed for the advanced study of the Spanish language (through courses on historical and descriptive analyses of phonology and syntax, linguistic theory, sociolinguistics, etc.) and literature (through courses involving literary history, genres, theories of literature, cultural studies, interdisciplinary approaches, etc.). Students are encouraged to take courses in other fields such as Comparative Literature, English, French, Italian, Philosophy, etc. Candidates for the Ph.D. may even select a field of lesser concentration outside the Program.
