The Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program emphasizes the preparation of students to enter professional careers. Developed in collaboration with industry and government professionals, this interdisciplinary program includes an internship, a capstone team project where real-life problems faced by government and industry are tackled, and workshops and seminars on professional skill development, including leadership, oral and written communication, intercultural understanding, intellectual property, project management, and ethics. All students pursuing the professional science master's degree will gain core competencies in statistics and research methodology, as well as applied topics such as simulation and modeling and geographic information systems. APPLIED COMPUTING: In addition to the core competency curriculum, which includes research methodology and statistical analysis, students in the applied computing program will study algorithms and data structures, computer networks and database management systems, plus cutting-edge issues in computing such as data visualization, artificial neural networks, and network security. BIOTECHNOLOGY: Biotechnology students will master such topics as: biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, genomics, bioethics, and proteomics. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & ASSESSMENT: Students working in environmental assessment will take three core courses on environmental science and risk assessment plus courses in the fields of ecology and conservation biology.
