The program provides a broad background in biomedical science, provides expertise in a selected area of research, and develops skills and insights necessary to become an effective teacher and an independent investigator. After completing a core curriculum of basic science courses, including participation as junior instructors in department courses, each student pursues an individually tailored program of advanced studies and directed research training in an area of his/her particular interest, with ultimate presentation of original research in a written thesis. Presentation of research findings at national meetings are encouraged and supported.
