Doctoral students are admitted to the program through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. In their first year these students are enrolled in an interdisciplinary core curriculum that provides a fundamental background in the biomedical sciences as well as the opportunity for laboratory rotations in diverse research areas. At the end of the first year, students may matriculate into the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology by choosing a member of that faculty as a Ph.D. mentor. Master's students are admitted directly into the Department, and their program involves a research project as well as courses in the biomedical sciences. Students usually complete their Ph.D. within 4 to 5 years, while the M.A. typically takes 2 years. The doctoral and master's programs provide a broad-based educational experience designed to prepare students for scientific careers in the twenty-first century.
