Winner of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students Award for the 2002 Department of the Year. Counseling: "Our master's in counseling program includes a variety of courses, practicum, and other training experiences which offer comprehensive preparation for professional practice as a counselor or therapist. Course work focuses on human development, personality, psychopathology, psychological research, and ethical and legal issues as well as individual, group, and family counseling. Training in counseling skill begins right in the first semester, and formalized practicum usually begins in the second year. Specializations are offered in community (including emphases in child and adolescent or substance abuse counseling) or school counseling."Counseling Psychology: "Our doctoral program in counseling psychology is based on a scientist-practitioner model for training professional psychologists, and is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. Students acquire a solid foundation of knowledge in the biological, cognitive, affective, individual, and social bases of human behavior. Through course work in research design, measurement, and statistics, students develop the skills needed to critically evaluate psychological research and to conduct their own independent research. Training in diagnosis, assessment, psychotherapy, consultation, practica, internship, and ethics provides students with the necessary professional skills to practice as competent and ethical counseling psychologists. Supervised practica and internship experiences are available through the university's Counseling Center and at a variety of community sites.
