The entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) degree combines the classroom and clinical experience needed to master the structure, function, theory, and practice of physical therapy. The program is open to students with a B.S. or B.A. degree. with the appropriate prerequisites. Students come from varied academic, cultural, and experience backgrounds. The program prepares students for physical therapy practice, enabling them to become therapists who seek to prevent injury, impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities; to maintain and promote fitness, health, and quality of life; and to ensure availability, accessibility, and excellence in the delivery of patient services. The full-time program takes three years, including summers, to complete. Students benefit from individualized attention, connections to 500 clinical sites around the country, and our location within a major research university in the heart of Manhattan’s medical district. Graduates are eligible to sit for licensure as a physical therapist. They assume leadership roles in prevention and health maintenance programs and rehab services and assist in developing policy standards tied to practice. Certifications are also offered in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, first aid and emergency preparedness, Pilates beginner mat, and the NSCA’s Specialist Certification. The 36-point D.P.T. for Practicing Physical Therapists enables licensed therapists to upgrade their clinical knowledge and skills. The M.A. program for therapists with a concentration in pathokinesiology focuses on in the analysis, synthesis, measurement, and evaluation of human motion and in research design and implementation. The Clinical Residency program in Orthopedic Physical Therapy is designed to equip licensed therapists with advanced orthopedic knowledge and clinical skills.
