All courses require intensive reading and discussion and lead to a breadth of knowledge that students can use in their jobs or further graduate studies. Students in WOMN 545 Feminist Knowledge and Social Change develop a social change project and in WOMN 555 Global and Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Women, write a traditional research paper. Assignments in other courses vary by instructor. Other courses address women's leadership, global health inequities, feminist pedagogies, the "roots" of feminism, and women's fiction. All courses approach the material rigorously and with a careful analysis of class, race, and other elements of difference. At least two courses are offered every semester, making it possible for students to complete the certificate in a year. Students may also proceed at a slower pace and take as long as they need to, given their particular circumstances. All students officially enrolled in the certificate are eligible to apply for a $1000 scholarship in the spring, for the coming year (including summer). The WKU Women's Studies Program has been highly successful in placing certificate earners in Ph.D. programs and have provided credentials for a number of faculty from other institutions interested in starting their own women's studies programs.
