As a leader in biological research and the global biotechnology industry, the Johns Hopkins University Advanced Biotechnology Studies graduate program delivers a rigorous and practical course of study tailored to working professionals. One of the largest programs of its kind and ideally situated, the program offers the unique combined strengths of faculty and experts from Hopkins, federal research and regulatory governmental agencies, and leading biotechnology companies. Onsite courses are offered evening and weekends. Students can also complete the degree fully online. The Master of Science in Biotechnology program is grounded in biochemistry and cell biology. The curriculum allows graduates to participate fully in research, lead lab teams, make development and planning decisions, and create and apply research modalities to larger schemes set in research projects. Students may choose to customize their curriculum or pursue a concentration in bioinformatics, biotechnology enterprise, regulatory affairs, molecular targets and drug discovery (some onsite lab work is required for this concentration), or biodefense. Hopkins also offers a joint MS in Biotechnology/MBA program for interested students. Hopkins has partnered with the Center for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute and the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases to offer two innovative graduate fellowship programs that prepare the next generation of scientists in the emerging fields of drug discovery and biodefense. Fellows earn an MS in Biotechnology with a concentration in Molecular Targets and Drug Discovery or Biodefense Studies, work at NCI or USAMRIID labs, and receive paid tuition for up to two years and an annual stipend. Students who want a good understanding of the business aspects of biotechnology to advance in this rapidly changing field can apply to the Certificate Program in Biotechnology Enterprise, which consists of six courses.
