The programs stress ample individual attention and personal interaction with fellow students and professors; the intimacy of seminar-based classes; the relationship between academic research and personal growth; and the formation of an online learning community where students interact on an ongoing basis. Students in the masterÆs and doctoral degree programs meet each August and January with faculty for a 4û5 day intensive at a retreat setting in the San Francisco Bay Areato receive face-to-face advising, attend workshops, give presentations, and discuss their work. The Transformative Leadership online MA program is for individuals who have the initiative, passion, and vision to facilitate positive social change and to make a significant contribution to the world. Students recognize that effective leadership requires specific skills in conflict resolution, group dynamics, and creative thinking. Also important is the ability to reflect on why change is needed, how it is conducted, and who is engaged in the process. Students ground their work in an action site, where they apply their learning on an ongoing basis. The MA program culminates in a capstone project to be conducted within the action site. The online PhD in Transformative Studies at CIIS provides students with the platform to pursue cutting-edge research for a topic of their choosing. Under the mentorship of an advisor, and in conjunction with a collaborative community of learners, students engage in scholarship that is original, personally meaningful, and transdisciplinary.
