The University of Rhode Island offers an innovative curriculum for the Masters of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. This program is designed to immerse students in a specialized area of human development, while providing a strong foundation in research, policy and practical knowledge of the field. Graduates from this program are prepared for leadership positions in human service and education administration, research and policy organizations, and for advanced academic work. A minimum of 41 credits of approved graduate courses are required including a developmental seminar, a sequence in policy, research and statistics, and a professional seminar. In addition, students will select a minimum of 9 credits in a specialization, such as child development, adolescent development, adult development, gerontology, public policy and administration, family studies, or family financial counseling/education. Students complete a portfolio and a master’s thesis. Students have the option of including up to 6 credits of a policy, administrative or research internship as part of the program of study. Electives can be selected from a broad list of departmental courses as well as courses identified from other related fields. Students have the opportunity to work with a diverse faculty, conduct independent studies, gain valuable real-life experience through internship placements, and conduct original research while completing a master’s thesis.
