At Newhouse, we provide our doctoral students with a stimulating intellectual environment in a topnotch professional school. Students may specialize in a variety of academic areas, most particularly:
  • media ethics and diversity ;
  • media sociology ;
  • new media ;
  • political communication ;
  • popular television ;
  • public relations ;
  • social effects ;
    Designed as a three year program, students take two years of coursework, followed by qualifying exams and the dissertation. Up to five students are admitted to the program each year.

    Our program emphasizes excellence in research and teaching. Current students are actively engaged in research incorporating a wide variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, and they are encouraged to present their work at national and international conventions. Newhouse doctoral students are active also in the Syracuse Future Professoriate Program, which provides superior training and mentoring in college level teaching.

    Newhouse doctoral students are funded fully for three years, with financial support from either an University fellowship, research assistantship or teaching assistantship.
