Theoretical perspectives range from classical social theory to feminism, interactionism, critical race theory, and postmodernism. Our faculty use diverse research methods including survey research, secondary data analysis, archival research, interviews, participant observation, and contextual analysis. With these basic tools and with guidance from the faculty, graduate students develop their interests. Recent graduate student projects have examined such topics as lesbian mothers, perceptions of health care, child sexual abuse, midwifery, and women in nontraditional careers. Others have focused on Latino migrant farm workers, female slasher movies, the history of ageism, Christian thrash-metal music, assisted care living, and the concept of glamour as expressed by drag queens and flight attendants. Some of our graduates have moved on to Ph.D. programs at Syracuse, University of Illinois, and University of Washington; others reentered the workforce as entrepreneurs, managers, and legal consultants.
