The Department of Biology in the College of Humanities and Sciences offers programs leading to the Master of Science degree. The graduates from this program are very competitive, with more than 90% accepted to doctoral programs and medical schools or employed with government or private industry. The program also offers opportunities for interdisciplinary study with the Center for Environmental Studies and cooperative research with departments on the Medical College of Virginia Campus. Current research interests include: cellular and molecular biology; genetics and genetic engineering; physiology; endocrinology; neurobiology; parasitology; developmental biology; behavior, physiological ecology; ethnology; and population and community ecology. Emphasis may be directed toward plant, animal, or microbiological studies.
A new $28 million Life Sciences building, with state-of-the-art laboratory and classroom space is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2001. The Life Sciences building along with the Biotechnology Park on the Medical College of Virginia Campus represents a university-wide emphasis on Life Sciences initiatives for the new millennium.
