M.A. students gain a broad knowledge of art as well as the ability to analyze and interpret works in areas of specialization. At this level, students develop an awareness of historiography, an understanding of theory and methodology in the discipline, and an ability to critically debate art and art history. The M.A. program culminates with a written thesis, independently defined and based on original research. Students work under the supervision of a faculty specialist in areas relevant to their chosen topics. The M.F.A. is a unique program that allows students to earn an art history masterÆs degree with additional electives in studio practice.
