The graduate program in English leads to a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree and prepares students for teaching at the secondary and community college levels; further graduate study in a doctoral program; and entry into various professions where critical thinking and writing are valued and employed.
Graduate study in English provides students with opportunities to study British and American literature intensively; it challenges them to solve complex problems related to literary scholarship. The program emphasizes independent literary research and the writing of scholarly papers that reflect an insightful understanding of literary criticism, literature's aesthetic and humanistic values, and literature's social and historical significance.
Along with British and American Literature, the areas of emphasis include: English Education (non-licensure), English Education (initial secondary teacher licensure, grades 6-12, MS degree only).
