The joint Rutgers-Newark/UMDNJ Graduate Program in Integrative Neuroscience (INS) provides students with research-oriented training in current integrative neuroscience. The Ph.D. program provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of molecules, neural systems, brain, behavior, and cognition.

The faculty of the Integrative Neuroscience Graduate Program is made up of members of the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience (CMBN), the department of Psychology, and the department of Biological Sciences at Rutgers-Newark, plus faculty from the department of Neuroscience at the nearby University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The faculty of the Integrative Neuroscience Program is committed to a multidisciplinary and integrative approach to neuroscience research utilizing the latest techniques. The innovative approaches that are now possible with molecular biological, immunological and neuroanatomical techniques, and technologies for imaging the human brain (such as the MRI), have provided the opportunity for unprecedented elucidation of the basic neuronal mechanisms underlying adaptive behavior in animals and humans, including higher cognitive functions such as speech, language and cognition. With new opportunities has come the need to develop new training initiatives, since an understanding of basic principles is required to thoroughly integrate basic and clinical research.
