The curriculum familiarizes students with developmental processes occurring in each age period and conceptual and methodological issues in developmental psychology. Students are trained to be disciplined researchers and competent classroom instructors. Students receive structured teaching and research training, and disseminate their research via conference presentations and publications. For students whose career plans emphasize college teaching, a teaching specialization is available. WVU’s Psychology Department received the “Innovation in Graduate Education Award” from the American Psychological Association in 2005. The award recognizes the junior-colleague model used to train graduate students in research, teaching, and program/service evaluation. As junior colleagues, students and faculty collaborate in research, rather than students serving as research assistants assigned to individual faculty. Students develop individualized plans of study. Contact among faculty and students outside the classroom is frequent and casual. Graduates of the life-span developmental program are highly successful in obtaining employment in academia.    The Department values a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds among our graduate students. All students can anticipate 4 years of financial support via assistantships (3 years if entering with a Master’s degree), plus a tuition waiver.     Accreditation Information:   # Of Credits Required:   Time To Degree: 2 years M.S., 4 years PhD    Previous Degrees B.S., B.A. Students with undergraduate or master's degrees in fields other than psychology are considered for admission. Most students accepted in the program have cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or more, where A = 4.0. Particular stress is placed on grades in psychology and performance in the last two undergraduate years; thus an upward trend in grades is favorably considered by the department.  Pre-Requisite Courses 12 credit hours in psychology. Recommended courses include introductory psychology, statistics, research methods, and research-oriented courses.
