The Department of English offers a broad study of British, American, and world literature, as well as Rhetoric and Composition. The M.A. in English develops literary, critical, and creative knowledge, preparing candidates for a variety of professional careers and/or further graduate study. The Ph.D. is designed to produce teacher-scholars who have a good general knowledge of critical theory, literature, and composition, as well as a specialized knowledge in their field of concentration. Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available to all qualified graduate students. Other forms of financial support are provided by the Office of Financial Services, the Graduate School, and the University.

There is no domestic application deadline for the master's and doctoral program.

Graduate Certificate Comparative Literary Studies

The Graduate Certificate in Comparative and/or Interdisciplinary Literary Studies is intended to provide post-baccalaureate degree and non-degree seeking students in the liberal arts and in related education fields the opportunity to broaden as well as intensify their knowledge of the comparative and interdisciplinary dimensions of literary studies. The Graduate Certificate in Comparative and/or Interdisciplinary Literary Studies will enhance the professional credentials and employment possibilities of those currently holding or seeking to hold teaching positions at the high school, community college, or university level. It will also enhance the background and qualifications of students seeking admission into liberal arts graduate study programs. It will enhance the credentials of professionals in the fields of international affairs, social sciences, the arts, and business as well as other related professional pursuits.

Students entering the Graduate Certificate Program in Comparative and/or Interdisciplinary Literary Studies will be required to have earned a B.A. in English or a related discipline; submit an official transcript; and submit
