The MPP is designed to produce astute policy professionals who will move rapidly to leadership positions in the policy world. The strong analytical approach of the program leads to skills in problem solving and research methods, and ensures familiarity with economic concepts and applications. Required courses in the policy process and national political institutions, theory and practice in public policy, finance and budget policymaking, and comparative political institutions contribute to students’ substantive understanding and ability to operate within a political context. Ethical considerations in policy making are incorporated throughout the curriculum. The program has a robust international emphasis that ensures that graduates think comparatively and globally about policy processes and problems. As an integral component of the School of Public Policy, the MPP program reflects the overarching themes of the School, including a focus on the critical interface between the public and private sectors, the changes in technology that underlie most of the profound changes modern societies are undergoing, and the interplay of culture, organizations and technology in a quest to find alternative approaches to policy decisions. These themes are reflected in the ten emphases, from which students may choose their electives; alternatively, students may work collaboratively with their academic advicsor to create their own area or emphasis based on the scope of their policy related interests. By drawing from the extensive offerings of other programs in the SPP, the Master of Public Policy Program presents an extraordinary range of possibilities to the MPP student.
