The programs in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) are designed to prepare teachers, researchers, and curriculum developers in English as a second language at all levels. Our programs are based on communicative methods of second language acquisition and a reflective model of teaching that incorporate collaboration with colleagues, students, and community and include a substantial field-based component. Our goal is to prepare professionals with a firm foundation in language, literacy, and applied linguistics along with an understanding of a range of second language teaching approaches that can be adjusted to suit the needs of different learner populations from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds. The TESOL programs affirm the value of heritage languages and cultures and take an additive view of second language acquisition. Our 12-month, full-time, Fast Track M.A. program option accelerates your preparation as a certified teacher in TESOL or in TESOL and a foreign language (dual certification). Specially designed for recent college graduates and career changers, the Fast Track program leads to initial teacher certification in an accelerated format that allows you to complete your degree in three consecutive semesters, including summers, of full-time study. Our summer graduate study abroad programs provide educators and graduate students with an opportunity to examine the intercultural perspectives on teaching and learning in China or in York and Oxford, England, and to explore the teaching of foreign languages, particularly English as a foreign language, across all school levels.
