The major fields of instruction for Ph.D. students are: Political Theory, American Government, Comparative Government, and International Relations. The Department offers M.A. degrees in the fields of American Government, Conflict Resolution, Democracy Studies and International Law & Politics. The programs build on three areas of Department and University strength. The first includes foreign policy, national security, and regional studies. The second area focuses on the normative and philosophical dimensions of political science and public policy, as well as disciplinary training in analytical methods and quantitative techniques. The third area capitalizes on the University's location in Washington, DC, emphasizing national politics, institutions, and policy.
