One of the most important functions of psychologists today is using research to help solve human problems, both individual and societal. Psychologists contribute to the solution of human problems by creating new knowledge through research as well as by translating that knowledge into action. Students in the graduate training program in personality at Northwestern University develop both research and consultative skills, so that they can collaborate with others in the real-world application of research findings. Within the personality program, it is possible to acquire expertise in a number of subspecialties. These include individual differences, behavior genetics, motivational theory, psychopathology, and cognitive/behavior therapy.
