The objective of the graduate program in materials science and engineering is to prepare students for careers in teaching, research, and design, based upon a fundamental understanding of materials behavior. Studies are in the following areas: the mechanisms underlying plastic flow and fracture in space alloys, intermetallic compounds, and ice; ice adhesion; thin film deposition for electronic, optical, and composite applications; modeling of microstructural evolution; the nature of friction and wear of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric surfaces; the degradation of concrete during freeze-thaw cycling; materials for prosthetic devices.
