Located in Washington DC, the School of Communication (SOC) at American University prepares students for a professional career. SOC's award-winning faculty, which consists of 42 full-time faculty, includes Emmy and Oscar winners, Fulbright scholars, and renowned documentary filmmakers whose work has appeared on Discovery and National Geographic channels and IMAX movie theaters. SOC's Film and Media Arts division offers an MA in Film and Video, MFA in Film and Electronic Media, and an MA in Producing Film and Video. The MA in Film and Video may be completed on a full-time basis in two years or students may choose to attend part time. The MFA in Film and Electronic Media, a terminal degree for those interested in teaching, may be completed on a full-time basis in three years or students may choose to attend part time. The MA in Producing Film and Video, designed for working professionals, is completed in 20 months. During graduate study, film students may participate in the Summer in LA program or spend a semester studying film production in Prague. SOC students typically complete one internship for credit during the course of their study, but participate in at least one additional internship because of the myriad opportunities available. SOC students have interned at organizations such as National Geographic and Discovery.
