The Department of Pharmacology offers a program of study leading to the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees. We prepare our students for careers in pharmacology by providing a thorough foundation in the fundamental principles of pharmacological science. We provide this framework by requiring a broad study of several major scientific areas as well as inculcating habits of self-education. Finally, we keep in mind that our trainees are individuals needing to capitalize on their own individual interests and strengths in order to make a maximum contribution to pharmacology. The research training of degree candidates is vital to the research interests of the faculty. One major thrust of the Department's research is aimed at understanding the ways in which drugs affect the regulation of nervous system functions. This includes: neurotransmitter/ receptor interactions; the pharmacology of nerve terminals; the neurochemical effects of spinal cord injury; the role of innervation in the development and control of cardiac arrhythmias and the role of the nervous system in the action of drugs on the heart. We also have active research programs involved with the study of cancer, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory pharmacology. The academic pursuits of the faculty cross most of the disciplinary lines of pharmacology. Research projects utilize isolated proteins and DNA, tissue cultures, tissues and organs, both isolated and in situ, experimental animals, and human subjects. Consequently, training in several areas is available.
