he Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offers a program of study leading to the Ph.D. degree. It aims to prepare students for successful careers as independent investigators in biomedical sciences and the biotechnology industry, as well as research investigators and teachers for universities and other institutions. The program admits 3-6 students yearly and has a high faculty/student ratio. This ensures strong interchange and mentoring as well as a highly qualified and motivated student population. Coursework is generally completed in the first year. Graduates are highly competitive and continue their career in the best scientific or industrial facilities worldwide. The Department also offers an M.S. program specializing in biotechnology (with the possibility of an emphasis in bioinformatics), whose curriculum reflects the multidisciplinary nature of biotechnology, integrating theoretical and lab-based science courses with exposure to the business, bioethical and legal framework in this field, including intellectual property issues, entrepreneurial development, regulatory concerns etc. The one-year (30 credit) program may be completed over a longer time frame for students who are already employed or wish to complete the program on a part-time basis.Additionally, a Biotechnology Graduate Certificate can be obtained through the Department. The Graduate Certificate Program in Biotechnology (15 credits) is best suited for individuals who have an interest in pursuing careers in the biotechnology industry. The Certificate Program courses are at the graduate level and are offered to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. On a full-time basis, students can complete the requirement in one semester.
