The Department of English of the University of Mississippi is a nationally recognized department of undergraduate and graduate instruction and literary research and creative writing. The Department offers a wide range of graduate courses in American and British literature, literary theory, rhetoric, composition, creative writing, and linguistics. The twenty-five tenure-track faculty are active teachers and scholars, and the Department has an impressive record of professional activity in terms of presentations at national and international conferences, leadership positions in professional organizations, publication in highly-regarded peer-reviewed journals, and publication of edited books and monographs. While we are strong in all fields of study, we are particularly strong in American and Southern literature. We also have a strong creative writing component, anchored by our writer-in-residence Barry Hannah and with the John and Renee Grisham Visiting Writer (this year Steve Yarbrough). The Department edits and publishes two highly regarded journals, The Yalobusha Review (creative writing) and Journal x (criticism), and sponsors the James E. Savage Lecture in the Renaissance and the Faulkner and YoknapatawphaConference.

Both Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships are available to graduate students, and both can be supplemented with Honors and Minority Fellowships. The Department also offers two dissertation fellowships.
