Enrollment in the Program in Microbiology and Molecular Pathogenesis at Dartmouth offers the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. degree at a leading academic institution that is located in an outstanding rural setting. The recently expanded multidisciplinary program includes faculty members from the Departments of Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Physiology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology in both the Medical School and the College. This provides a wide range of opportunity for study and interaction that is generally administered through the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB). Individuals interested in applying for admission may choose to direct their application through the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology or through a specific department. Course requirements and curriculum for students will vary somewhat depending on the graduate program into which they are enrolled. As an example, during the first year, students enrolled in the MCB Program will normally take an intensive two-term course in molecular and cellular biology, the introductory course in immunology, and a course in molecular genetics. By the end of the second year, it is generally expected that a student will have taken advanced-level courses in biochemistry, biology, molecular genetics, and immunology; four such elective courses are required. The graduate program utilizes laboratory rotations in the first year as a means to introduce students to laboratories in which they may do their thesis research.
