The University of Michigan Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a dual degree MD-PhD program. The MSTP is designed primarily for students who are interested in a future career in academic medicine with a focus on basic research related to medicine. Most of the graduates of the Program hold faculty positions at major US Medical Schools and many have developed national reputations in their fields of research. The program has approximately 80 participants. In the MSTP, the PhD may be earned in any field that is relevant to medicine. The MSTP receives financial support from many sources including base funding from the University of Michigan Medical School. The largest single source is that provided through a training grant from the National Institutes of Health. Fellows receive full tuition, stipend support and health insurance. The modal time to complete the integrated curriculum is seven and one half years. The MSTP fellows must meet the rigorous requirements of the graduate and medical schools and of the Program itself. They also must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The MSTP deadline is October 15 for receipt of the AMCAS application and letters of reference. More detail can be found on our website.
