The concentration takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding children, youth, and families in their natural settings, with training that includes psychological, sociological, anthropological, and educational approaches to understanding human development and families in the U.S. and in other cultures. Within HDFS, students may select emphases in human development or family studies. Students choosing to specialize in human development obtain foundations in theory and research on social, emotional, cognitive, and cultural aspects of development across the life span. Students then typically concentrate their work on particular phases of the life span and theoretical problems of development. Students choosing to specialize in family studies take seminars in family theory, interpersonal relationships, group processes, family development, and cross-cultural and subcultural family patterns. Drawing from the faculty's interdisciplinary strengths, students design their work to investigate particular types of family structures or ecological questions.
