The Master of Science degree offers both a thesis and non-thesis option. The non-thesis option offers educational and career training as Pathologist's Assistants (PA). Students selecting this path enroll in a 22-month rigorous, structured program. The PA Program offered through our department is one of only five programs within the United States certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). PA students completing our curriculum are eligible to take the American Association of Pathologist's Assistant (AAPA) Fellowship Examination. Although not required, passing of this examination enhances the student's professional credentials and increases employment opportunities. Our PA Program has the highest AAPA examination score average of any of the certified institutions. The thesis option Master of Science degree emphasizes independent thinking and prepares the student for work in research laboratories in academic institutions, the government, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Our Doctor of Philosophy in Pathology jointly with our dual Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy degree provides students with the advanced knowledge, skills and experience to conduct independent research in a biomedical environment. Graduates with an advanced degree in pathology are uniquely suited to understand the interactions of basic and clinical research. With a grounding in basic biology and genetics, our graduates are also equipped with an awareness of the clinical relevance of their training and research, enabling them to conduct research in both the fundamental basis of pathological states, and to apply their studies to the diagnosis and therapy of human disease.
