The Department of Human Genetics in the School of Medicine offers advanced graduate study leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The graduate program trains scientists for research in the rapidly expanding field of human genetics. The Department of Human Genetics is one of only a few such departments on the East Coast. Students have the opportunity to participate in the translation of genetic knowledge into revolutionary new approaches for diagnosis and treatment of human disease. The major areas of study include: molecular genetics, clinical and molecular cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, behavioral genetics, population and quantitative genetics, genetic epidemiology, clinical genetics, and genetic counseling.
The department also offers a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling. A thesis is not required for the degree in genetic counseling. In lieu of the thesis, students in this track are required to successfully pass comprehensive oral and written examinations.
